Look again at the Prado Annunciation by Fra
Angelico. What's going on in the background?
Adam and Eve are being expelled from the garden of Eden by an
angel. Adam has
told God that it was all Eve's fault, which is somewhat arguable as he
was a willing participant in the whole thing.
Eve's disobedience has
brought on all the woes of the world, including death. Mary's obedience to
the word of God will redeem mankind and bring about eternal life.
One event is a mirror image of the other.
It is up to the observer of the painting to make those links, of
course. Don't explain everything, let them work it out for
themselves.
Fra Angelico was a master story teller.
