Duccio's Maesta |

The
deposition is one of the most familiar scenes in art, and yet it is
barely mentioned in the gospels. The narrative focus is on Joseph of
Arimathea, the elderly haloed man on the ladder: 'And
he bought fine linen, and took him down.' (Mark 15 v46). One
of other male figures will be Nicodemus. John mentions that Joseph
and Nicodemus are both members of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish High
Court, and followers of Jesus. They presumably did not agree with
the verdict on Jesus. The other figures represent Mary the mother of God, Mary Magdalene (behind her) and the various other Marys mentioned in the gospels. |
