In John's gospel, the calling of Peter (or Simon, as he was at that
point) does not take place in a boat. In Luke, Christ is in the boat
with Simon, and Andrew is not involved. So Duccio's version is based on
that of Mark and Matthew.
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called
Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were
fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers
of men. And
they straightway left their nets, and followed him. |
