September 2014 - Puglia

A week in Puglia, a new area of Italy for us. Some extraordinary places; the Sassi cave houses of Matera, the cone-shaped buidlings or Alberobello, the shrine of St Nicholas in Bari, the cave-crypt in Monte Sant'Angelo.  Not  an area full of art, but some interesting things. Here are some frescoes from Santa Maria Maggiore in Monte Sant'Angelo - badly damaged, but enough is left to see the strong Byzantine feel of the art from this part of Italy.
