Note: This panel adds Joseph's dream down
on the right: And
when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to
Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his
mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word:
for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. Who is the young man leading the donkey? Tradition has it that it is the son of Joseph by a previous marriage. See my study on the Flight into Egypt for more on this. If Duccio had followed strict biblical chronology the Flight should have come before the Massacre of the Innocents. It has been pointed out that if Duccio had done this it would appear that the Holy Family were heading straight for the massacre, rather than away from it. |
