This early interpretation of the Nativity shows it taking place in a cave rather than a stable; the stable tradition became entirely dominant in the work of later artists. Here is Giotto's version, which, apart from the building, is quite similar in content. As with Margarito, he includes on the right the annunciation to the shepherds. What is different, of course, is the far greater realism in the depiction of the figures, human, angelic and animal. |
