Cologne. Memling doesn't waste time with the preliminaries - he's
straight in with the pilgrimage. In the background are a number of
Cologne landmarks including the cathedral. At the top right, through the window, we see the scene of the angel visiting Ursula to tell her of her future martyrdom. (see below) Panel 2: Arrival and departure form Basel. The pilgrims (including men) arrive by boat on the river Rhine: in the distance on the right they head for the Alps and Rome. |
