The Legend of St. Ursula and the 11,000 virgins
The Carpaccio cycle: Accademia, Venice

6. The Meeting between Pope Cyriacus and the Pilgrims.

Most of the buildings in the sequence are based on fantastical versions of Venetian architecture, but in this picture there is a real building; the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Pope Cyriacus isn't so real - the general view is that he never existed. However, the Golden Legend gets round this one:  it tells us that 'The clergy could not accept what he had done, and removed his name from the catalogue of the Popes.'

7. The Pilgrims' Arrival in Cologne

On the left Ursula and Cyriacus lean out of their ship and talk to a boatman. In the right foreground four bad guys representing the Huns are beginning to plot. The dog is just not that bothered.
